How Much Do Dental Crowns Cost in the US?

Are you thinking about getting a dental crown? It’s a good option for improving the appearance of chipped, cracked or discolored teeth.

A dental crown is basically a cover that’s placed over your “real” tooth to improve the appearance of your teeth and can also provide needed strength to weak teeth. Some other common uses for dental crowns are to hold together parts of a broken tooth, covering a dental implant, help prevent a tooth from breaking and also holding a dental bridge in place.

If you’re thinking about getting a dental crown, probably one of the biggest questions you have is how much do dental crowns cost? Below we’re going to answer that question, look at the costs of different types of dental crowns and also examine the factors that ultimately affect how much you end up paying for a crown.

In the United States, you can figure on the average cost of a dental crown being around $1000 per crown.

That $1000 figure is a good average, however, you’ll find a fairly large range in what people end up paying for dental crowns. Crowns can be as low as $300 and cost up to $3000 on the high end.

So what determines where on that range you’ll likely end up paying for a dental crown? Perhaps the biggest factor is the tooth the crown is being used to cover. Where it is in your mouth, the size of the tooth, and the health or condition of the tooth will all affect how much the crown will cost you. Another factor is what type of material your crown is made of. (We’ll take a more detailed look at these materials and their costs in a minute.) As with most cosmetic dentistry procedures, the cost of a crown will also be affected by where in the US you live and the experience level of your cosmetic dentist.

Porcelain Crown Costs

Porcelain crowns usually are the most expensive kind of crown available. You can figure on them ranging anywhere from $800 – $3000.

Metal Crowns Costs

Metal crowns are the mid-range kind of crown when it comes to costs. They will cost about $700 on the low end and can get up to $2500 on the high end.

Porcelain Fused to Metal Crowns Costs

This option is kind of a hybrid between the previously mentioned options. They are also about the most affordable crown options out there. Costs for them start around $500 and go up to $1500.

One more helpful piece of information to add here. Dental insurance may pay for part of your dental crown. Whether they do or not comes down to whether you/your dentist can demonstrate the crown is not just for cosmetic reasons. If it helps improve your oral health and/or is used to fix a broken tooth, then insurance may help cover some of the cost. So check with your dentist and insurance company to see if that’s the case for you.
